Women's Hoops Opens 2017-18 ECC Schedule With Loss At LIU Post
Purple Knights Fall To Host Pioneers, 69-61
Brookville, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team opened its 2017-18 East Coast Conference schedule at LIU Post on Wednesday night, and the visiting Purple Knights fell to the host Pioneers, 69-61. UB is now 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the ECC. LIUP moves above .500 overall at 5-4, and the Pioneers are 1-0 in conference play.
Two UB players had double-doubles on Wednesday in sophomore Kadijah Dickson (Queens, N.Y.) with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds plus junior Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) had 13 points and grabbed 11 boards. Vonleh also had five blocked shots on the night.
Sophomore Briana Stoddart (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave the Purple Knights three players in double-digit scoring, as she finished with 10 points.
Turnovers and free throw shooting proved to be the difference in the contest, as Bridgeport committed 22 turnovers that the Pioneers turned into 19 points; while LIU Post had a total of 14 turnovers. LIUP also hit 21-of-25 free throws. The Purple Knights went to the foul line only eight times on the evening hitting five of those shots.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team returns to Hubbell Gym of an East Coast Conference tilt versus NYIT on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Fans can receive free admission to the game by bringing a new and unwrapped children's toy that will be donated to Bridgeport's Cardinal Shehan Center.
