Women's Basketball Falls In 2017-18 Season Opener To St. Michael's, 69-61
Samnell Vonleh Leads UB With 17 Points And 16 Rebounds
Bridgeport, Conn.- The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team fell in its 2017-18 season opener at home on Saturday afternoon, as UB fell to St. Michael's (VT) College, 69-61, and an all Purple Knights battle at the UB Women's Basketball Crossover Classic.
After a tied first quarter at 14-14, St. Michael's pulled ahead to take a four-point halftime lead, 33-29. St. Mike's outscored Bridgeport by four in the second half also to make the final deficit eight points.
Junior center Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, MA) led the Purple Knights in scoring and rebounding notching an impressive double-double with 17 points and 16 boards. She added two assists, two steals, and a block. Sophomore guard Kadijah Dickson (Queens, NY) also scored in double digits and contributed across the box score, amassing 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and a couple of steals.
St. Michael's Leah Spencer had a game-high 19 points, and her teammates Maddy Bennett and Samantha Delaney contributed 16 and 10 points respectively.
Both teams will be back in action on Sunday to close out the 2017 UB Women's Basketball Crossover Classic, as St. Michael's will play the University of the District of Colombia at noon while UB will face Southern Connecticut State University at 4:00 p.m.
