UB Women Edge STAC, 62-61, On Camera Miley's Bucket With 15 Seconds To Play
Purple Knights Head Into Final Week of The Regular Season Battling For A Spot In The ECC Championship Tournament
Bridgeport, Conn.-A jumper by University of Bridgeport senior Camera Miley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) off an assist from classmate Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) with 15 second to play gave the host UB women's basketball team a 62-61lead which proved to be the final score, as a three-point shot at the buzzer by the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans was no good in an East Coast Conference battle in Hubbell Gym. The Spartans, who were down by as many as 21 points in the first half and trailed 38-20 at halftime, had taken a 61-60 advantage with 31 seconds to play when Alex Bertolino split two free throws to set up Miley's game-winning shot. With the win, Bridgeport heads into the final week of the 2016-17 regular season with a 13-12 overall and a 7-8 ECC mark. STAC is now 17-10 overall and 11-6 in conference action.
Sophomore Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) led the host Purple Knights in scoring and rebounding in Saturday's win netting 16 points and grabbing nine boards. Vonleh also blocked three shots on the afternoon.
Samnell was joined in double-figure scoring by Camera Miley, as her game-winning hoop gave her 14 points on the day.
UB sophomore Nicole Johnson (Newark, N.J.) added nine points for the winners.
Alex Bertolino and Jenna Erickson led St. Thomas Aquinas, as they each scored 15 points for the Spartans.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will play game two of a key three-game homestand to open the final week of the regular season on Monday night when the Purple Knights host the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College in ECC play. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. on Presidents' Day.
