Women's Hoops Stops Mercy, 98-63, For Win Number Six In Row
UB Now 6-1 Overall And 2-0 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team picked up its sixth consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights defeated the visiting mercy College Mavericks, 98-63, in East Coast Conference action at Hubbell Gym. The 98 points scored are a single-game, season high for UB this season, as the team is now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Mercy slips to 1-7 overall, and the Mavericks are 0-3 in the ECC.
Senior Camera Miley (Brooklyn, N.Y.), sophomore Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) and graduate student Anastasia Williams (Central Islip, N.Y.), each had 13 points to lead the Bridgeport offense. Williams finished with a double-double grabbing a whopping, game-high 19 rebounds; while Vonleh added eight rebounds and four blocked shots, plus Miley had four assists and three steals on the day.
UB junior Aurelie Leblanc-Florent (Longueuil, Quebec, Canada) also reached double-digit scoring with 12 points. Leblance-Florent hit four three-point shots and also had a game-high six assists in the victory.
Senior Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) and sophomores Sierra Gerald (Paterson. N.J.) and Nicole Johnson (Newark, N.J.), each netted nine points in the winning effort for Bridgeport.
The Purple Knights dominated the game on the glass outrebound the visiting Mavericks, 62-43, on the day.
Mercy's Caralie Wilson led all scorers on the afternoon with 22 points, as she connected on seven three-point shots.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will look to run its winning streak to seven, when the purple Knights hit the road for a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at Chestnut Hill College. Game time in Pennsylvania is set for 7:00 p.m.
