Purple Knights Nip Southern Connecticut State, 68-67, To Earn First Women's Basketball Win Of 2016-17
UB Now 1-1 On The Young Season
Bridgeport, Conn.- The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2016-17 season and a split of the season-opening UB Women's Basketball Classic with a 68-67 win over visiting Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday afternoon in Hubbell Gym. The Purple Knights are now 1-1 overall; while the Owls fall to 0-2 overall.
SCSU opened the contest with a made jumper just 19 seconds into the first quarter, but UB scored 20 seconds later and held on to the lead for the rest of the game. Down 43-32 at the half, the Owls fought back in the second half outscoring Bridgeport, 35-25, but they could never come all the back to take the lead.
The Purple Knights won the battle of the boards outrebounding the Owls, 50-38.
Sophomore Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) had a double-double for the winners with a team-high 13 rebounds and 14 points. Junior Aurelie Leblanc-Florent (Longueuil, Quebec, Canada) led the Purple Knights with 17 points.
Maria Weselyj of SCSU led teams with 18 points.
The UB women's basketball team is back in action at Dominican College (N.Y) on Saturday November 19 versus Felician College and on Sunday November 20th versus Dominican, as part of the Fourth Annual Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament. Saturday's game is set for 3:00 p.m., and Sunday's contest will begin at 1:00 p.m.
