Purple Knights Continue Run Of Strong Play But Fall In ECC Women's Hoops At Roberts Wesleyan
Host Redhawks Top UB, 69-61
Rochester, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team continued its strong play of late, but the Purple Knights came up just short on the road against one of the East Coast Conference's top teams, the Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks, 69-61, on Friday night in western New York. UB is now 7-13 overall and 5-7 in conference play. RWC is now 17-3 overall and 9-3 in the ECC, plus the Redhawks have won three games in a row.
Bridgeport trailed by only three points at the half, 33-30, and faced that same deficit after three quarters, 51-48, before the hosts outscored the Purple Knights, 18-13, in the final stanza.
Junior Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) led Bridgeport in scoring on Friday night with 16 points, and she was joined in double figures by freshmen Kadijah Dickson (Queens, N.Y.) with 15 points and Briana Stoddart (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 11 points. Dickson led the Purple Knights on the glass with nine rebounds, and she also contributed four assists and four steals on the evening.
Roberts Wesleyan's Samantha Courtney led all scorers and rebounders in the game with an impressive double-double of 29 points and 15 rebounds.
The UB women's basketball team will close out its road trip to western New York on Sunday afternoon at Daemen College in Amherst, N.Y., just outside of Buffalo.
