Women's Basketball Wins Seesaw Affair At Mercy, 74-70
Victory Snaps Three-Game Losing Skid For The Purple Knights
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team snapped a three-game streak with a 74-70 road win over the Mercy College Mavericks in a seesaw affair that saw 12 ties on the afternoon. With the win, UB is now 6-13 overall and 4-5 in East Coast Conference play. Mercy falls to 1-17 overall and 1-8 in the ECC.
With score tied at 62-62 with 4:43 to play after Bridgeport junior Tanisha Carter (East Hartford, Conn.) connected on a pair of free throws, the Purple Knights would then take a 64-62 lead which they never relinquished, closing the game out with a 12-8 run, when sophomore Aziza Patterson (Teaneck, N.J.) hit a lay-up after a steal by senior Edna Marant (Philadelphia, Pa.).
Carter led Bridgeport in scoring with 18 points and also tallied eight rebounds coming off the Purple Knights' bench. She was joined in double-figure scoring by senior Marie Biondi (West Haven, Conn.) with 13 points, and Marant chipped in 12 points and four steals for the winners.
Mercy's Jasmime Williams led all scorers on the day with 25 points playing the entire 40 minutes of the game.
The UB women are back in action at Hubbell Gym on Wednesday night when the Purple Knights open a two-game homestand with a tilt against conference leader, Dowling College. Action begins in the Park City at 5:00 p.m.
