Tanisha Carter Hits Game-Winner With Just Over Five Seconds To Play To Lift Women's Hoops To 55-53 Win Over SNHU
Marie Biondi Nets A Season-High 14 Points For The Winners
Bridgeport, Conn.-Junior Tanisha Carter (East Hartford, Conn.) hit a jump shot with 5.6 second left to play after she rebounded her own missed shot to lift the University of Bridgeport women's basketball team to a 55-53 win over the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen in the opening game of the 2011 UB Women's Basketball Classic. Bridgeport is now 3-8 on the season, and SNHU is 9-3 overall.
Trailing 31-19 at the half, Southern New Hampshire came back to tie the game up at 51-51 with 4:04 to go and 53-53 with 3:24 to go largely due to red-hot shooting as SNHU hit 13 of 18 shots in the second half (72.2%). The Penmen never took the lead in the second half as they were hampered by 33 turnovers on the day, 17 of which came in the final 20 minutes. Bridgeport was not much better at taking care of the ball committing 25 turnovers.
Carter led three Purple Knights in double-figure scoring with 16 points, and she was joined in double figure by senior Marie Biondi (West Haven, Conn.) who netted a season-high 14 points and senior Edna Marant (Philadelphia, Pa.) who had 11 points, six assist and four steals. UB senior Julia Colley (Harlow, England) had a fine all-around contest with nine points, a game-high eight rebounds and five assists plus two steals.
Sloane Sorrell led Southern New Hampshire with nine points.
Bridgeport will look to run its winning streak to three game tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. when they face number one Bentley University in the final game of the 2011 UB Women's Basketball Classic. SNHU will take on Dowling at 2:00 p.m. in tomorrow's opening game in the classic.
