Big Finish Helps Women's Basketball To 62-57 Home Win Over C.W. Post
Edna Marant Leads UB With 16 Points
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team broke a 52-52 tie with a 10-5 run over the final 2:44 of the game, as the host Purple Knights posted a 62-57 comeback East Coast Conference win over the visiting C.W. Post Lady Pioneers on Thursday night. With the win, UB is now 10-11 overall and 8-6 in conference play. CWP is now 9-10 overall and an even 7-7 in the ECC.
Trailing 28-22 at the half, Bridgeport shot the ball well in the second half, hitting 14 of 26 shots (53.8%), and the UB defense limited the Lady Pioneers to s hooting percentage of only 34.4 percent (11 of 32) over the final 20 minutes.
Junior Edna Marant (Philadelphia, Pa.) helped spark Bridgeport to the victory scoring a game-high 16 points and grabbing five rebounds coming off the Purple Knights' bench.
Edna was joined in double figures by senior Kelly Keil (Sparta, N.J.) who scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked five shots on the night. Sophomore Elsebeth Birman (Silver Spring, Md.), with 11 points, and junior Julia Colley (Harlow, England) plus senior Elinor Avny (Raanaana, Israel), who each scored 10 points, rounded out the five Bridgeport players in double-figure scoring. Birman also had a game-high seven rebounds.
Felicia Joyner led C.W. Post with 13 points.
Bridgeport returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Dowling College. Game time on Long Island is set for 1:00 p.m.
