Late Free Throws Lift NYIT To A 60-58 Win Over UB Women
Strong Comeback Falls Just Short
Old Westbury, N.Y.-New York Tech's Alexandra Venuto hit two free throws with 11 second to play in the second half to give the host Bears a 60-58 East Coast Conference women's basketball win over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Saturday afternoon. Venuto's free throws spoiled a furious UB comeback that saw the Purple Knights come back from being down by 10 points, 58-48, with just 4:29 to play. Bridgeport tied the game at 58-58 with just 21 second to play when senior Ivana Savic (Belgrade, Serbia) hit a three-pointer. With the loss, Bridgeport is now 3-5 overall and 2-2 in ECC play. NYIT is now also 3-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Junior Julia Colley (Harlow, England) led three Bridgeport players in double-figure scoring with 18 points on the afternoon. Colley was joined in double figures by senior Elinor Avny (Raanaana, Israel), who connected on five of seven three-point shots, with 17 points and senior Kelly Keil (Sparta, N.J.) with 10 points.
Bridgeport's Ivana Savic grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
New York Tech was led by Cierra Baker who netted a game-high 22 points for the Bears.
Bridgeport is next in action at home on Sunday, December 19th when the Purple Knights host St. Rose at 2:00 p.m.
