Bridgeport, Conn.-the University of Bridgeport softball team split a home East Coast Conference doubleheader with the Molloy College Lions on frigid Sunday in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights blanked the Lions, 3-0, in the opener, and the visitors came back to take game two, 5-4. With the split, UB is now 13-10 overall and 2-4 in the ECC. Molloy is now 10-11 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
In game one, junior Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) fired a two-hit, complete game shutout to raise her season record to 8-5, as she fanned eight batters and issued only one walk. Burawski has now spun a total of five shutouts so far in 2022.
Classmate Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.), who had two hits in game one, provided all her team's offense in the victory with a three-run homer to right-center in the bottom of third inning.
In game two, UB jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings on an RBI-single by Kaira Ramon (Sr., Stamford, Conn.) and a three-run homer by Kiana Robinson (So., Hamden, Conn.), but Molloy stormed back with five runs in the top of the fourth inning, and the Lions would then hold on for the win in the nightcap.
For Bridgeport in game two, Robinson, Madison D'Amato (Fr., Warwick, R.I.) and Meg McFarland (Jr., Monroe, Conn.), each contributed two hits apiece to a nine-hit offensive attack.
Up next, the UB softball team is slated to host local rival Southern Connecticut State in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Seaside Park. First pitch is set for 2:03 p.m.
