Sparkill, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team battled back win game two and earn a big East Coast Conference road doubleheader split with the host St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Friday afternoon, as the Purple Knights won the nightcap, 3-1, after falling 7-1, in the opener. With the split, UB is now both 12-3 overall and in the ECC. STAC is now 18-4 overall and 12-2 in conference action.
In the opener, UB grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by senior Samantha Ferreri (Hauppauge, N.Y.), but the hosts would quick score three runs in the bottom of the second to grab a lead which they never relinquished.
In game two, sophomore Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) dominated the high-powered Spartans' offense from the pitching circle, as she fired a complete game, two-hitter, in which she fanned seven batters to up her season record 6-1.
The Purple Knights took advantage of three St. Thomas Aquinas errors to plate their three runs after trailing 1-0 entering the fourth inning.
Freshman Kiana Robinson (Hamden, Conn.) had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Bridgeport offense in nightcap.
Up next, the UB softball team is schedule to face another tough road test on Sunday afternoon heading to Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., where the two team will complete their suspended game tied at 1-1 heading into the ninth inning from Thursday afternoon before their regularly scheduled doubleheader slated to beginning at 1:00 p.m.
