Purple Knights Blanked By Mercy In Opener Of Thursday Doubleheader And Game Two Suspended By Darkness
Second Game To Be Completed At Mercy On Sunday
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team was limited to only one hit in the opener of a home East Coast Conference doubleheader against the Mercy College Mavericks on a windy and frigid Thursday afternoon is Seaside Park, as the visitors won, 3-0, and game two of the day was suspended with the score tied 1-1 after eight innings of play and will completed before the teams' scheduled doubleheader at Mercy on Sunday. With the loss, UB is now 11-2 both overall and in the ECC. Mercy ups is record to 13-6 overall and 12-3 in the ECC.
In the opener, sophomore Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) had Bridgeport's only hit, and senior Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) suffered her first loss of the season despite pitching well, as she fired a complete game allowing only one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and only one walk. Her record so far in 2021 is now 3-1.
In game two, Yates gave UB an early 1-0 lead with a first inning RBI single, but Mercy tied thing at 1-1 in the top of the seventh with an unearned run.
The Purple Knights are right back in action tomorrow as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
