Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a home East Coast Conference doubleheader against the Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday, as the Purple Knights won game one, 11-3 in six innings, and dropped the nightcap, 5-2. With the split, UB is now 22-6 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Mercy is now 16-14 overall and 4-6 in the ECC.
In game one, Bridgeport trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning before the hosts stormed backed with three runs in the fourth, five runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to pick up the victory.
Sophomore Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) had four runs batted in and two hits in the opener to help graduate student Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) earn win number 11 on the year in the pitching circle.
Junior Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) had three hits for the winners in game one, and junior Abbigail Blanchard (Pawcatuck, Conn.) plus sophomore Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.), each had two hits for Bridgeport to assist in the comeback.
In game two, the Purple Knight banged out 10 hits but left 10 runner on base in the loss, as Sabor had two hits and an RBI, and junior Cassidy Blackwell (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in UB's other run and had two base knocks.
Up next, the UB softball team travel to St. Thomas Aquinas for a Sunday afternoon ECC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 noon.
