Game 2
Bridgeport, Conn.-Pitching and defense plus some timely hitting in the opener ruled the day for the University of Bridgeport softball team on a frigid Monday in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights moved to 21-3 on the season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep over the Holy Family University Tigers winning both games by scores of 2-1. HFU is now 2-24 on the season.
In the opener, UB trailed 1-0 heading into the fifth inning but tied the scored on a two-out RBI hit by Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.).
The scored remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh when Bridgeport walked off with the victory in game one after a two-out hustle double by Luzzi who scored on a single by sophomore Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.).
Graduate student Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) continued to dominate in the pitching circle for the Purple Knights, as she upped her season record to 10-1 firing a complete game six-hitter with nine strikeouts in the opener.
In the nightcap, UB got an RBI from junior Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) in the first inning and scored on a throwing error in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead which they never relinquished as the pitching duo of junior Ashley Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) and sophomore Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) made the advantage stand up.
Eisnor earned her sixth win of the season, as she worked 6.1 innings allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts, and Hillman notched her first save of the year recording the final two outs of the game.
Up next, the UB softball team will travel to LIU Post on Thursday afternoon for a big early season East Coast Conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
