Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team moved its overall record to 17-3 so far in 2019 and remained undefeated in East Coast Conference play at 4-0 with a home sweep of the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Saturday afternoon in Seaside Park, as UB won game one, 7-0, and completed the sweep with a comeback 15-10 triumph in the nightcap. With the two losses, QC is now 2-13 overall and 0-4 in the ECC.
In game one, graduate student Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) was outstanding in the pitching circle firing a four-hit complete game shutout with five strikeouts to raise her season record to 8-1.
Sophomore Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in for Bridgeport in game one, and classmate Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) knocked in three for the winners with two hits. Senior Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) slammed for third home run of the year for the winners, a two-run shot in the third inning.
In game two, the Purple Knights trailed 8-1 after the top of third inning before coming back to grab the win scoring one run in the third, four in the fourth, five in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth inning.
Elyssa Marmolejo again starred on offense in the nightcap going 3-for-5 (7-for-9 at the plate in both games) with four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Junior Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) reached base all five time at the plate in game two going 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in, plus she scored five runs.
Ramon and DiLorenzo each knocked in three runs in game two, and junior Cassidy Blackwell (Los Angeles, Calif.) also had three hits for Bridgeport in game two.
Sophomore Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.), the second of three UB pitchers in game two earned her fifth win of the year.
Up next, the UB softball team is slated to face Molloy College at home in a Sunday East Coast Conference doubleheader scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
