Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team stayed red-hot on Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Knights opened their 2019 home and East Coast Conference schedules with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting NYIT Bears winning game one, 10-3, and taking the nightcap, 4-0. UB, winners of six games in a row, is now 14-2 overall and 2-0 in the ECC. NYIT is now 5-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
In the opener, Bridgeport brought out the big bats scoring 10 runs on 12 hits including two home runs and a total of five doubles. Junior Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) went 3-for-4 in game one with three doubles and four runs batted in. Sophomore Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) had two hits in the game one win with four runs batted in, as she blasted a three-run homer, and junior Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had two hits, including a home run, plus she scored three runs and had two RBIs.
Graduate student Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) pitched a complete game five-hitter in the opener with 10 strike outs, as she improved her season record to 6-1.
In game two, the Purple Knights scored all four runs in the third inning, as sophomore Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.) knocked in a pair, and Luzzi and Ramon each had one RBI.
Junior Ashley Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) was simply outstanding in the pitching circle in nightcap spinning a two-hit shutout in which she fanned seven batters to raise her season record to 4-1.
Up next, the UB softball team will travel to American International College for a Thursday afternoon non-conference doubleheader.
