Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team evened its season record at 17-17 and moved to 4-8 in East Coast Conference play an impressive home sweep over the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights in Seaside Park on Thursday afternoon, as UB won game one, 3-1 and finished the day with a 6-3 victory in game two. Queens is now 9-13 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
In the opener, senior Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) was simply dominant in the pitching circling firing a complete game in which she allowed only five hits and struck out 11 and did not issue a walk. Staheli is now 8-6 on the season.
In game one, sophomore Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had two hits, and freshman Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) drove in two runs, and sophomore Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) had the Purple Knights' other RBI.
In the nightcap, senior Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with a run batted in, and Luzzi added two more hits for the winners. Sabor added two more runs batted in for UB, and freshman Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.), Ramon, junior Kamryn Beach (Tamps. Fla.) and junior Stephanie Dean (Old Lyme, Conn.), each knocked in a run.
Sophomore Ashley Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) picked up the win in game two firing a complete game to up her season record to 6-10, as she allowed only three hits, struck out six and walked two.
Up next, the UB softball team will look to continue its four-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon at LIU Post with an East Coast Conference doubleheader. Game time on Long Island is set for 12 noon.
