Old Westbury, N.Y.- The University of Bridgeport softball team came up short on both ends of the doubleheader in their ECC match-up Saturday afternoon against the host, New York Institute of Technology Bears 11-10 in game one, in nine innings and 11-5 in game two. With the two losses, UB is now 12-14 overall and 1-5 in the ECC. NYIT moves to 5-11 overall and 3-3 in the ECC.
In the opener, Bridgeport had a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning but the host, NYIT got on the board with one run. The sixth inning was an exciting one for the Purple Knights as they added four runs while the Bears only added one to end the inning with a score of 7-3. In the bottom of the seventh the Bears gained momentum putting up six runs making it a tie game at nine. The Purple Knights were only able to add one more while NYIT finished the game in the bottom of the ninth.
In game one, freshman Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif) had three hits and two RBI, and junior Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Freshman Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) and teammates Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, IL) sophomore and Stephanie Dean (Old Lyme, Conn.) junior all drove in one run for the Purple Knights.
In the nightcap, the Purple Knights fell 7-11 to the host, NYIT Bears. Junior Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif) led the charge for UB each contributing 2 hits a piece. Senior Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.), added two RBI for UB.
Up next, the UB softball team will be traveling to Mercy College on Sunday afternoon for a double header in another East Coast Conference match-up.
