Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened its 2018 home schedule in fine style on a windy and chilly Sunday afternoon in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights swept a non-conference doubleheader from the American International College Yellow Jackets winning game one, 10-7, and taking game two, 4-1. With the two victories, UB is now 9-7 overall. AIC slips to 1-13 on the year.
In the opener, Bridgeport pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind to secure the win.
As a team in game one, the UB bats boomed banging out 14 total hits, as five players, Samantha Sabor (So., Plainfield, Ill.), Kamryn Beach (Jr., Tampa, Fla.), Yalitza Rodriguez (Sr., Freeport, N.Y.) and freshmen Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.) plus Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) , each had two hits. Sabor and Rodriguez each drove in three runs for the winners.
Senior Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) earned the win in the pitching circle in game one working a complete game in which she allowed only three earned runs to pick up win number four on the year.
In the nightcap, sophomore Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) blasted a two-run homer and Yalitza Rodriguez plus sophomore Abbigail Blanchard (Pawcatuck, Conn.), each one RBI to back the fine pitching of sophomore Ashley Eisnor (Medford, Mass.).
Eisnor fired a four-hit, complete game in which she allowed only the one run while fanning four and issuing just two walks. Ashley is now an even 4-4 on the season.
Kaira Ramon added two more hits for Bridgeport in game two.
Up next, the UB softball team will continue a busy week of action with a Monday doubleheader at Post University. First pitch in Waterbury, Connecticut is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
