Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened a busy stretch of eight games in four days to close out the 2017 regular season with a doubleheader split at East Coast Conference leader Mercy College on Thursday afternoon, as UB won game one, 4-1, and fell in the nightcap, 9-6. UB is now 19-20 overall and 7-11 in conference play. Mercy ups its overall mark to 27-13, and the Mavericks are 16-6 in the ECC,
In game one, UB jumped on the Mercy with four runs in the first inning, and senior pitcher Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) made those runs hold up, as she fired a complete game in which she fanned five and walked only two.
Freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had two hits for the winners in the opener.
In game two, senior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) launched her fourth home run of the season, and junior Gabryelle Dubois (Carlisle, Iowa) had two hits, bur Mercy scored a total of eight runs in the first three innings and never looked back to earn to the split.
Up next, UB softball team will host Molloy College in an ECC doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Seaside Park at 2:30 p.m.
