Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a Senior Day East Coast Conference doubleheader with the visiting Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday afternoon in Seaside Park, as STAC won the opener, 5-3, and the host Purple Knights came back to take a 6-3 victory in game two. With the split, UB is now 18-19 overall and 6-10 in conference play. St. Thomas Aquinas is 16-20 overall and 6-12 in the ECC.
In game one, sophomore Cherlynn Townsend (Hurst, Texas) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and one runs scored, and freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had a two-RBI triple in the sixth inning.
Senior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) was a hard-luck loser in the pitching circle for UB in the opener, as she worked a complete game allowing only one earned run on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, senior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) led a 10- hit Purple Knights offensive attack by going 3-for-3 with three runs batted and two runs scored. O'Leary crushed her third home run of 2017 in the fourth inning, a solo shot, and knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth with a single.
Sophomore Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) and junior Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.), each had two hits in game two, and sophomore Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) drove in two runs plus freshman Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) had one RBI.
Senior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) earned her ninth win of the season in the nightcap firing a complete game in which she allowed only one earned run on nine hits. Bua fanned five and walk only one batter on the day.
