Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a home, non-conference doubleheader with Holy Family University in Seaside Park on Monday afternoon, as the visiting Tigers won game one, 15-3 in five innings, and UB came back to take the nightcap, 5-2. With the split, Bridgeport is now 17-18 overall. HFU is now 18-16.
In the opener, sophomore Stephanie Dean (Old Lyme, Conn.) had two of her team's three hits, and she also drove in a run.
In game two, after Holy Family had tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning, senior Ashley Hessler (Pawtucket, R.I.) blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, her first homer of 2017, to give the Purple Knights a 3-2 lead which the never relinquished.
Senior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) had two hits and drove in two runs to help UB to the game two victory.
Senior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall. N.Y.) pitched a complete game in game two to earn her eighth win of the season. Bua allowed only one earned run on six hits, as she fanned five and walked two over seven innings.
Up next, the UB softball team returns to conference play on Thursday afternoon at home versus Molloy College. Action is slated to begin in Seaside Park at 2:30 p.m
