Bridgeport
Bridgeport, Conn.-After a slow start to the 2017 home season on Sunday being swept by NYIT, the University of Bridgeport softball team turned things around in a big way on Monday afternoon in Seaside Park, as UB swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights winning game one, 10-2 in six innings and posting a 2-0 victory in the nightcap. The Purple Knights are now 15-12 overall and an even 4-4 in conference play. Queens falls to 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the ECC.
In the opener, Bridgeport scored seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back. Senior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) played a key role in the UB offense in the opener driving in four runs, and she also added two base hits. Freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had two hits and an RBI in game one, plus sophomore Janaya Young (Orange, Conn.) added two base hits, and freshman Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.), the reigning ECC Rookie of the Week, drove in two runs to aid the 10-run attack.
Senior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) earned her sixth win of 2017 in game one working the first five innings.
In game two, UB scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBIs by sophomore Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Samantha Sabor, and that was all the offense senior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) would need, as she spun a five-hit complete game shutout in which she struck out four and did not issue a walk. Bua is now 7-4 on the season.
Freshman Abbigail Blanchard (Pawtucket, R.I.) also hit two hits for UB in game two.
