Rockville Centre, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team was finally able to open its 2017 East Coast Conference schedule on Sunday afternoon at Molloy College, as the visiting Purple Knights split the double dip with the host Lions, falling in game one, 5-1, and coming back to take game two with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, 5-4. UB is now 12-9 overall and 1-1 in the ECC. With the split, Molloy is now 12-10 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
In Sunday's opener, the Purple Knights were limited to only one hit in the 5-1 loss, a seventh inning home run by sophomore Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.), her third long ball of the season.
In the nightcap, Bridgeport trailed 3-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, but the visitors came back for three runs on and RBI double by freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) and another two-bagger by senior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) that knocked in two teammates with two outs. O'Leary led the Purple Knights' offense with three hits in game two.
Senior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) pitched a complete game to earn her fifth win of 2017 in second game, as a potential Molloy rally to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh ended with a runner being thrown out on the bases to end the contest.
Up next, the UB softball team is scheduled to continue conference play at LIU Post on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
