Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a pair of games on day two of their annual Spring Break trip to Florida on Friday to raise their 2017 season record to 5-1, as the Purple Knights opened the day with a 7-0 loss against the University of Findlay, and the team quickly rebounded to post a 9-2 win over the Lions of Georgian Court University.
In Friday's opener against Findlay (7-8), junior catcher Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.) had a double for the Purple Knights, and senior pitcher Alyssa Bua (Cornwall. N.Y.) did a fine job in relief allowing only one run in five innings pitched.
In the win over GCU (1-8), sophomore Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in. Freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had three hits and drove in two runs, and junior Gabryelle Dubois (Carlisle, Iowa) had two hits and one RBI.
Senior Ashley Hessler (Pawtucket, R.I.) had two runs batted in in the win over Georgian Court, and classmate Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) also knocked in a run for the winners.
In the circle, junior Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) pitched a complete game in which she allowed only three hits to earn her first win of 2017.
On Saturday, the UB softball team continues play in Florida taking on Assumption and St. Anselm.
