Leesburg, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened its annual Spring Trip to Florida with wins over Stonehill College, 5-3, and Bentley University, 9-1. The two victories keep the Purple Knights unbeaten in the early going of the 2017 season at 4-0.
In Thursday's opener against Stonehill (1-11), junior catcher Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.) drove in four of the Purple Knights' five runs, as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Senior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) and freshman Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Illinois) also contributed two hits apiece to the UB offense against the Skyhawks.
Senior pitcher Alyssa Bua (Cornwall. N.Y.) fired a complete game against Stonehill to raise her season record to 2-0, as she fanned four and allowed seven hits and one walk on the day.
Against Bentley (4-5), the Bridgeport offense was in full effect, as the game was called after five innings with UB in front, 9-1.
Junior Gabryelle Dubois (Carlisle, Iowa) went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs against the Falcons, and teammates Meghan O'Leary plus sophomores Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla,) and Cherlynn Townsend (Hurst, Texas), each had two runs batted in.
Senior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) pitched the Purple Knights to the win over Bentley, her second victory of 2017, as she allowed five hits.
On Friday, the UB softball team continues play in Florida taking on the University of Findlay and Georgian Court University.
