Wilmington, Del.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened its 2017 season on a chilly Sunday afternoon in Delaware with over Goldey-Beacom University. The Purple Knights won a tight opener, 6-5, and then the bats exploded for an 11-1 win in the nightcap. With the two losses, the host Lightning are now 1-7 on the season.
In the opener, Gabryelle Dubois (Jr., Carlisle, Iowa), Cherlynn Townsend (So., Hurst, Texas), Kamryn Beach (So., Tampa, Fla.), and Alexandria Rodi (Fr., Cranston, R.I.) each had two hits.
Senior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) pitched 5.1 innings to earn the victory allowing four hits with six strikeouts, and freshman Ashley Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) earned the save in her UB debut working 1.2 innings.
In game two, freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Yalitza Rodriguez (Jr., Freeport, N.Y.) and Kamryn Beach, each had two hits for the winners.
Senior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) got the win in the nightcap working five innings in which she allowed no runs. Junior Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) worked the sixth and Eisnor finished the game for the Purple Knights.
Up next, the UB softball team heads to Florida for its annual Spring Trip to the Sunshine State. UB opens play in Florida this Thursday with games against Stonehill and Bentley.
