Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team was swept in an East Coast Conference home doubleheader by the ECC's team top team, the Bears of NYIT, on Saturday afternoon in Seaside Park, falling in game one, 10-0 in five innings, and being edged in game two, 6-5. UB is now 19-27 overall and finish the regular season at 12-16 in conference play. NYIT is now 33-11 overall and 22-4 in the ECC. The Purple Knights now must await the outcome of Sunday's doubleheader between NYIT and Queens to see if they will earn a spot in next week's 2016 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament.
After being held to only one hit in game one, Bridgeport went toe-to-toe with NYIT in the nightcap, as the Purple Knights rallied from trailing 4-1 to tie the game at 4-4 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth; only to see the Bears plate two unearned in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. UB would score a run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score, 6-5, and had runners on second and third as the game ended.
In game two, senior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a run batted, and junior Kerri Agrela (Smithfield, R.I.) also had three hits. UB senior Paige Owens (Berlin, Conn.) has two hits and two RBI, and classmate Imane Alou Issa (Berchem, Belgium) added two base hits and one RBI.
Up next, the UB softball team will play a non-confernce, single game at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday morning at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
