Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team moved closer to clinching its first trip to the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament since 2008 on Thursday afternoon in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights split a conference doubleheader with the visiting LIU Post Pioneers, winning game one, 5-2, and falling in game two, 9-3. With the split, UB is now 19-15 overall and 12-14 in conference play. LIUP is now 30-11-1 overall and 19-5 in the ECC.
In the opener, junior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) knocked in two runs, and freshman Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) went 2-for-2 at the plate and blasted her second home run of the season.
UB freshman Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) also had two hits for the winners in game one to back the fine pitching of junior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.).
Bua picked up win number eight of the season firing a complete-game, seven-hitter in which she fanned four and walked only one.
In game two, O'Leary smacked her sixth homer of the year, and DiLorenzo added two more hits.
Junior Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs for Bridgeport in the nightcap.
Up next, the UB softball team will close out its 2016 home schedule with a Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday against NYIT. Game action is slated to begin at 12 noon preceded by Senior Recognition at 11:45 a.m.
