Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team continue its fight for final spot in the 2016 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament by picking a key ECC sweep over the visiting Dowling College Golden Lions on Sunday afternoon in Seaside Park. The Purple Knights won game one, 5-1, and completed the sweep with an 8-5 triumph in game two. With the sweep, UB is now 16-24 overall and 9-13 in conference play. Dowling slips to 11-27 overall and 6-17 in the ECC.
In the opener, junior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) and freshman Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) powered the Bridgeport offense, as they each had two hits and drove in all five runs, as O'Leary knocked in two and Beach had three runs batted in.
In the pitching circle in game, one, junior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall. N.Y.) fired a five-hit complete game win to up her season record to 6-9.
In the nightcap, Beach added two more hits and had an RBI, as did senior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.) to help propel a nine-hit Bridgeport attack.
Junior Kerri Agrela (Smithfield, R.I.) also drove in two runs for the winners in game two.
Classmate Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) picked up the win in the circle in game two to even her season mark at 8-8. Lajoie allowed seven hits, five runs (four earned) with six strikeouts and three walks in her seven innings.
Up next, the UB softball team will travel to St. Thomas Aquinas College for another key ECC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
