Rockville Centre, N.Y.-An RBI groundout by junior Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.) in the top of the eighth inning gave the University of Bridgeport softball team a 3-2 lead which classmate Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) made stand up with a scoreless bottom of the eighth, as UB split an East Coast Conference doubleheader at Molloy College on Saturday afternoon. UB lost game one, 2-1, and picked up the 3-2 victory in the nightcap. With the split, the Purple Knights are now 14-24 overall and 7-13 in conference action. Molloy, which split both doubleheaders this season with Bridgeport, is now 26-16 overall and 15-7 in the ECC.
In game two, the Purple Knights scored their other two runs in the first inning and an RBI triple by freshman Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) and an RBI single by junior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.). O'Leary also drove in the Purple Knight's lone run in the opener.
In the pitching circle in game two, Lajoie was simply outstanding firing an eight-inning complete game to up her season record to 7-8. Kaitlyn allowed seven hits over those eight inning with two unearned runs, and she fanned seven and allowed only one base on balls.
In the opener, junior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) pitched well but was the hard luck loser pitching a complete game in when she allowed seven hits, two runs with five strikeouts and two walks.
The UB softball team is right back in action on Sunday afternoon at home when the Purple Knights host the Dowling College Golden Lions in an ECC double dip. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Seaside Park.
