Bridgeport, Conn-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a high-scoring, non-conference doubleheader with the visiting Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College, as UB won game one, 9-7, and lost game two, 9-8. With the split, the Purple Knights are now 13-23 overall. GBC is now 8-28.
In the opener, UB scored all nine of its runs in the fourth inning. Junior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) homered and had two hits and three runs batted in game one. Freshman Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) had two hits and two RBI for the winners in the opener, and classmate Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) had three hits. Freshman Stephanie Dean (Old Lyme, Conn.) also had two hits and an RBI to help Bridgeport to the win.
All that offense made a winner of junior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.), who picked up win number six of the year in relief, and senior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.) got the final out of game one to pick up her first save of 2016.
In game two, O'Leary hit another home run and drove in two more runs with that blast; her fifth homer of the year, and DiLorenzo drove in three runs with a pair of base hits.
Senior Paige Owens (Berlin, Conn.) had three hits and one RBI in the nightcap, and junior Ashley Hessler (Pawtucket, R.I.) hit her first home run of the season, but UB saw Goldey-Beacom rally with three runs in the top of the seventh and then throw out the tying run at the plate to end the game and pick up the victory in game two.
Kamryn Beach added two more hits for the Purple Knights in game two.
The UB softball team returns to East Coast Conference action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Molloy College.
