Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader at Mercy College on Monday afternoon. The Purple Knights won game one, 1-0, and saw Mercy rally to win game two, 10-5. With the split, Bridgeport is now 11-21 overall and 5-11 in the ECC. The host Mavericks are now 16-20 overall and 7-11 in conference play.
In the opener, junior pitcher Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) made a first inning RBI single by freshman Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) stand up, as she tossed a three-hit complete game shutout, in which she fanned two and did not allow a base on base. The win lifts Bua's season record 5-7, and she has pitched eight consecutive complete games.
In game two, UB trailed 2-1 heading to the sixth inning before scoring four runs to grab a 5-2 lead, as Beach tied things at 2-2 with her second RBI of game two, and then the Purple Knights followed with three RBI singles from junior Kerri Agrela (Smithfield, R.I.), freshman Janaya Young (Orange, Conn.) and senior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.).
Mercy would come back to score eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, and retired the Purple Knights in the seventh to preserve the victory.
Up next, the UB softball team is slated to host the Knights of Queens (N.Y.) College in an ECC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Seaside Park. Action is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
