Bridgeport, Conn.-Junior Kerri Agrela (Smithfield, R.I.) wrapped a base hit to center field with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to score pinch runner Brittney Maio (Sr., Guilford, Conn.) from second base and give the host University of Bridgeport softball team a 3-2 win over the visiting American International College Yellow Jackets and a split of their non-conference doubleheader on a frigid Wednesday afternoon in the Park City. AIC won game one, 4-2. With the split, Bridgeport is now 8-20 overall. American International is now 11-12.
Agrela's game-winning single made a winner out of junior Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) who is now 3-7 on the year after working all eight innings in which she allowed only six hits with eight strikeouts and only one walk in tough condition.
Senior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.) and freshman Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.) each had two hits for the winners in game two, and Crandall also had an RBI.
In game one, Agrela had two hits and freshman Kamryn Beach (Tamps, Fla.) blasted her first collegiate home run.
Junior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) pitched her sixth straight complete game for the Purple Knights in the opener allowing six hits and three earned runs in her seven inning of work with one strike out and two walks.
Up next, the UB softball team returns to East Coast Conference action when the Purple Knights host St. Thomas Aquinas College for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader on Friday in Seaside Park.
