Homers Help Softball Sweep St. Thomas Aquinas
UB Blasts Four Home Runs and Smashes 25 Hits On The Day To Pick Up Two ECC Road wins
Sparkill, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team feasted on St. Thomas Aquinas College pitching on Thursday afternoon, as the visiting Purple Knights amassed a total of 25 hits in two games and blasted four home runs on the day, as UB swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from the host Spartans taking game one, 6-3 and completing the weep with a 9-1 victory in six innings in the nightcap. The Purple Knights are now 16-18 overall and 9-7 in conference play. STAC falls to 2-20 overall and 1-11 in the ECC.
In the opener, UB had 12 hits including home runs from freshman Kelsey Spaziani (Hopatcong, N.J.), and juniors Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J. ) and Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.). Spaziani drove in three runs in the opener, and Blair had two RBI.
Sophomore Jennine Walsh (Langley, B.C. Canada) picked up her first win of 2014 in the pitching circle in game one working 5.2 innings in which she allowed only four hits.
In game two, UB had 13 hits as team led by junior Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn.) and freshman Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.), who each had the hits. O'Leary also had three runs batted in on the nightcap, as did freshman Ashley Hessler (Pawtucket, R.I.) who had a bases-clearing triple.
Junior Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) clubbed a home run and had a double in game two, as she drove in two runs for the winners.
Freshman Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) continued to shine in the pitching circle in her first season at UB firing a four-hit, complete game win to raise her season record to an impressive 8-2. In her six innings of work, Bua struck out five and did not issue a walk.
