Softball Posts Non-Conference Home Sweep Of Nyack
Purple Knights Win Game One, 8-0 And Game Two, 8-3
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team upped its 2014 overall season record to 13-17 with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Nyack College Warriors on a cool and rainy Monday afternoon is Seaside Park. UB won game one, 8-0, in a game that was halted in the sixth inning, and the Purple Knights completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory in game two in a game that was halted after 4 ½ innings due to rain. With the two losses, the Warriors fall to 2-20 on the season.
In the opener, UB freshman pitcher Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) raised her season record to 6-1 by firing a two-hit, shutout, the team's first shutout of the season. Alyssa struck out five and did not issue a walk.
On offense in the opener, the Purple Knights banged out 12 hits led by juniors Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) and Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn.), who each had three hits and two runs batted in. Junior Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.) had two hits and two RBI in game one, plus freshman Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.) added two hits and classmate Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) also had two runs batted in.
In the nightcap, the Bridgeport offense was again strong smashing 10 hits led by freshman Kelsey Spaziani (Hopatcong, N.J.), who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore Paige Owens (Berlin, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with three runs batted, and Katelyn Wall added two more runs batted in for the winners.
Senior hurler Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief in game two to raise her season record to 5-2.
The UB softball team returns to East Coast Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Dowling College. Action is set to begin on Long Island at 3:00 p.m.
