Softball Runs Winning Streak To Five With 7-6 Victory Over Mercy
UB Now 5-0 In Conference Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team ran its winning streak to five games and raised its East Coast Conference record to 5-0 with a 7-6 home win over Mercy College on a rainy Saturday morning in Seaside Park. The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two was not played due to the rain and will be made up at a later date. The Purple Knights are now 10-11 overall. The Mavericks fall to 3-16 overall and are 0-3 in conference action.
After Mercy tied the game at 5-5 with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Purple Knights plated two runs of their own on and RBI double by freshman Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.), who went 3-for-3 at the plate and a fielder's choice by junior Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.), who knocked in three runs for the winners.
Senior Mallory Streat (Guilford, Conn.) and junior Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) each also had two hits for the Purple Knights.
Senior Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief for UB working 2.1 innings in which she allowed only one run on four hits while fanning five and allowing no walks.
The UB softball team is next scheduled to host Post University on Monday afternoon.
