Purple Knights Remain Undefeated In ECC Softball Play With Home Sweep Of NYIT
UB Takes Game One, 3-2, And Game Two, 4-2
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team remained undefeated in East Coast Conference play at 4-0 with a sweep of the visiting NYIT Bears on Thursday afternoon. The Purple Knights took game one, 3-2, and completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory in game two. UB is now 9-11 overall. NYIT slips to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the ECC.
The Purple Knights scored all their runs on Thursday by using the long ball. Freshman Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) crushed a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning of the opener to give UB all the runs the team would need to grab the 3-2 win.
In game two, O'Leary would launch another big fly, a solo shot in the fourth inning, but a three-run homer by junior Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, California) was the big blow for Bridgeport giving her team a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning which the Purple Knights would never relinquish.
For the second straight doubleheader, freshman Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief in both games, and senior Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched the save in both games. Bua is now 4-1 on the year, and Irrera has five saves.
The UB softball team will look to continue its winning streak on Saturday afternoon when they host an ECC doubleheader with Mercy College. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
