Softball Team Wraps Up Florida Swing With Split Versus Assumption
Purple Knights Head Home With A 5-9 Record
Clermont, Florida-The University of Bridgeport softball team closed out its annual Spring Trip to Florida by splitting two games against the Assumption College Greyhounds on Friday afternoon, losing a pitchers' duel in game one, 3-2, and coming back to gain the split with a 9-3 win in game two. The Purple Knights head back home with a 5-9 record to open the 2014 season. Assumption is now an even 5-5 in 2014.
In game one, freshman Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) pitched well allowing only two earned runs, and senior Mallory Streat (Guilford, Conn.) blasted her second home run of the year.
In game two, Streat continued to be hot at the plate hitting two doubles and driving in four runs. Juniors Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.) and Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn.) each had two hits for the winners.
Senior Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned the victory in the pitching circle working five innings and allowing only one earned run. Freshman Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) completed the pitching chores for UB firing two innings of scoreless relief.
The Bridgeport softball team is next schedules to be in action on Wednesday, March 19, when the Purple Knights travel to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on American International College in a non-conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:00 p.m.
