UB Softball Defeats West Liberty And Falls To Tiffin
Purple Knights Head Into Final Two Days of Play In Florida With 4-6 Record To Open 2014
Claremont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team continued its season-opening trip to Florida by splitting two games on Wednesday. The Purple Knights opened the day with a seven-run explosion in the top of the seventh inning to notch a 9-5 win over West Liberty University, and the team closed out the day with a 5-2 loss versus Tiffin University. Bridgeport is now 4-6 on the season.
In the win over West Liberty, UB trailed 3-2 heading into their last at bat in the top of the seventh. In that inning, the Purple Knights exploded for seven runs to take a 9-3 lead which they would not relinquish.
UB tied things up at 3-3 on a base hit by junior Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.), and then took the lead for good on two-RBI single by senior Mallory Streat (Guilford, Conn.) and a two-RBI triple by junior Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.).
Senior Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) fired a complete game in the pitching circle to record her second win of 2014 versus West Liberty.
Against, Tiffin, the Purple Knights were limited to only two hits. In the pitching circle, freshman Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) took the loss allowing only three earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched, and classmate Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) did not allow the Dragons an earned run in 2.1 innings pitched.
On Thursday, the Purple Knights will face Bentley and Urbana on the team's next to last day of action in the Sunshine State.
