Emma Wojcik's Squeeze Bunt Single Lifts UB Softball To 4-3 13-Inning Victory Over Mercy
Teams Battle For A Total of 22 Innings On Thursday
Stratford, Conn.-A perfectly executed squeeze bunt single by graduate student Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) plated the winning run in the bottom of inning number 13 and lifted the University of Bridgeport softball team to a 4-3 win over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks and a split of Thursday regularly scheduled East Coast Conference doubleheader and put the wraps on a long day of 22 innings of play. Action opened on Thursday afternoon with the Purple Knights scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 7-5 victory in a game that was suspended on April 2 at Mercy. The Maverick won the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader with a 6-3 victory. After Thursday's busy afternoon, UB is now 16-22 overall and 7-13 in conference play. Mercy now sits at an even 19-19 overall and 10-11 in the ECC.
Junior pitcher Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) received a decision in all three of Thursday's game, and the two wins and one loss give her a season mark of 9-9 so far in 2013.
In the regularly scheduled opener on Thursday, the Bridgeport players, Wojcik, and sophomores Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.) and Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) each had two hits.
In the nightcap, Phillips went 4-for-5, Griesinger added three hits and Wojcik had two hits and drove in the winning run on her squeeze bunt single. Freshman McKenzie Shea (Spokane Valley, Wash.) added a pair of hits.
The UB softball team is scheduled to be back in action on Saturday, April 20 at 12 noon when the Purple Knights host ECC-leading LIU Post. Saturday is Breast Cancer Awareness Day at DeLuca Field.
