Bridgeport Softball Back In Win Column With Sweep Over Nyack
UB Wins Game One, 1-0, And Completes Sweep With 3-1 Win In Game Two
Orangeburg, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team got back in the win column on Monday afternoon with a non-conference sweep at Nyack College, as UB took game one, 1-0, and completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory in game two. The Purple Knights are now 13-20 overall. Nyack slips to 5-22 on the season.
In the opener, the only run of the game came on a second inning solo home run by sophomore Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.). Monday's homer is Phillips' third of the season. That lone run was all starting pitcher Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would need as she picked up her sixth win of the season, firing a three-hit complete game victory in which she struck out four and did not issue a walk.
In game two, UB sophomore Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 at the plate, and she slammed her fifth home run of 2013. Senior Stephanie Pearce (Surrey, England) and freshman McKenzie Shea (Spokane Valley, Wash.) had the other runs batted in for the winners. Freshman Jennine Walsh (Langley, B.C., Canada) notched win number seven of the year in the pitcher circle for Bridgeport, as she hurled a completed game in which she allowed only two hits, struck out five and walked no one.
The Bridgeport softball team is back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 16, when the team returns to East Coast Conference action, as they host NYIT at DeLuca Field in Strafford. Action begins at 3:00 pm/
