Busy Week Of Action Ends For Bridgeport Softball With Split Against Queens (N.Y.) College
QC Takes Game One, 4-2, And Purple Knights Rebound To Win Game Two, 5-2
Stratford, Conn.-Playing its fifth doubleheader in six days, the University of Bridgeport softball team wrapped up a busy week of action by splitting an East Coast Conference doubleheader with visiting Queens (N.Y.) College. QC won game won, 4-2, and the Purple Knights rebounded to take game two game to gain the split with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap. UB is now 10-15 overall and 4-7 in conference play. QC is now 8-14 overall and 6-5 in the ECC.
In game one, Bridgeport grabbed a 2-0 lead after four innings, scoring on an error and a perfect suicide squeeze bunt by Jade Blair (So., West Deptford, N.J.), but Queens came back to score four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 4-2 win.
In game two, graduate student Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland), who had two hits in the opener, went 3-for-4 at the plate. Sophomores Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.), Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol. Calif.) and Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn.) each had two hits for the winners, and Wall drove in two runs.
In the pitching circle, junior Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was simply outstanding in the pitching circle firing a complete game in which she allowed six hits, two runs (both unearned), while fanning three and not issuing a base on balls. Saturday's win raises her season record to 5-6.
The UB softball team will take Sunday off before beginning another busy week of play with a non-conference doubleheader at Post University on Waterbury, Conn. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
