Softball Opens 2013 Season With A Pair Of Tight Games Against St. Rose And Stonehill
Purple Knights Will Now Face Assumption For A Pair Of Contests On Saturday
Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened its 2013 schedule in Florida on Friday afternoon, and the Purple Knights dropped a pair of tight games, falling to the College of St. Rose, 3-2, and to Stonehill, 2-0.
In the season opener against the Golden Knights of St. Rose, UB pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning as sophomore Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, N.Y.) and graduate student Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) drove in runs.
Bridgeport held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but St. Rose (2-8 overall) pushed across a pair of unearned runs to make a hard-luck loser of freshman Jennine Walsh (Langley, B.C., Canada), who was outstanding in her Purple Knights' debut pitching a four-hit complete game in which she allowed only one earned run, striking out two and allowing n o walks.
UB wrapped of the day with a 2-0 loss to a quality Stonehill team. Junior Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was outstanding in the pitching circle firing a complete game in which she allowed no earned runs and struck out seven Skyhawks.
The Purple Knights are back in action in the Sunshine State on Saturday when they play two games versus Assumption College.
