Freshman Jade Blair Ties Game One In Bottom Of The Seventh And Knocks In Game-Winning Run In Bottom Of the Ninth For UB
Stratford, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team surpassed its win total from last season as the Purple Knights spilt a home East Coast Conference doubleheader with the visiting Mercy College Mavericks on a cold and windy Thursday afternoon, as UB won game one, 4-3 in nine innings, and saw the Mercy come back to take game two, 14-3 in six innings. With the split, Bridgeport is now 10-13 overall and 4-6 in the ECC. The Mavericks are now 13-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play. In 2011, the Purple Knights posted a total of nine wins for the season.
In the opener, freshman Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.), who sent the game into extra innings with double in the bottom of the seventh to knot the contest at 3-3, won the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth that plated classmate Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, N.Y.). Blair had two hits and two runs batted in game one, and Dunn went 3-for-4 to lead the UB offense.
Sophomore Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief of starter Alitha Krolikowski (Jr., Bristol, Conn.) to raise her season record to 7-4, as she pitched two innings of scoreless softball.
In the nightcap, Mercy raced out to a 10-0 lead on its way to the 14-3 win.
Freshman Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.), Morgan Dunn and freshman Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn.) each had an RBI for Bridgeport in game two.
The UB softball team is back in action at home on Saturday as they host C.W. Post in an ECC doubleheader. Action gets underway at DeLuca Field at 12 noon.
