UB Softball Opens 2011 Campaign By Splitting Two Games In Florida
Purple Knights Defeat St. Thomas Aquinas And Fall To Philadelphia U.
Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened its 2011 on Sunday in Clermont, Florida by splitting two games.
The Purple Knights opened the season with a 7-3 win over fellow East Coast Conference member St. Thomas Aquinas College (0-2). UB closed out its first day of action in the Sunshine State with a 9-0 loss versus Philadelphia University (1-1).
Against STAC, freshman Chloe Shill (Miami, Fla.) pitched a complete game to record the win, as the Purple Knights rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning capped off by a two-RBI double from freshman Kelly Olencki (Milford, Conn.).
Also in the season opener, junior Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) starred both in the field and on offense making several top-notch plays in the field and going 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Senior Nicole Steiner (Edison, N.J.) added a triple for the winners in Sunday's first game,
Against Philadelphia U., the Purple Knights could only managed two hits as they were blanked by the Lady Rams.
Head coach Dawn Stearns and the Bridgeport softball team return to action early on Monday morning in Florida facing St. Michael's College at 8:30 a.m. and Bentley University at 10:30 a.m.
