Swim Teams Open Busy Weekend Of Action At Southern Connecticut State
UB Men Defeat SCSU, 143-133, But Women Fall To The Host Owls, 125-120
New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams opened a busy weekend of action that features three dual meets in three different locations on Friday afternoon at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. The UB men defeated the host Owls, 143-133; while the UB women were nipped by a score of 125-120.
Three different Purple Knights men's swimmers won two events on Friday, as junior Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) won the 100 Yard Back (51.94) and the 200 Yard Back (1:54.14), freshman Kosta Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) took first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:01.22) and the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:14.28) and sophomore Mihovil Bakovic (Split, Croatia) captured the 200 Yard Butterfly (1:58.20) and the 100 Yard Butterfly (52.64).
The UB men also took home four other individual event victories in Friday's victory, as junior Klavio Meca (Triana, Albania) won the 1650 Yard Freestyle (16:45.51), freshman Jose Javato (Caceres, Spain) topped the podium in 200 Yard Free (1:45.65), sophomore Erik Hren (Maribor, Slovenia) sprinted to first in the 50 Yard Free (22.30) and junior Juan David Mafla (Cali, Columbia) won the 100 Yard Free (48.92).
On the women's side, senior Annagrazia Bonsanti (Caracas, Venezuela) continue her strong 2017-18 campaign by taking three individual first places, as she won the 1000 Yard Freestyle (10:35.97), the 500 Yard Free (5:15.15) and the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:01.24).
Junior Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) was a double-event winner for the UB women on Friday winning the 200 Yard Freestyle (1:56.58) and the 50 Yard Free (24.41).
Senior Victoria Tornelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took first place in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in a time of 1:10.85.
The UB swim teams are right back in the water on Saturday, as the head to Manhattan to face New York University in a dual meet that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
