Swin Teams Open 2017-18 Season With Dual Meet At Rowan

Glassboro, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport swimming teams opened their 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon at Rowan University in New Jersey. In the women's meet, Rowan topped the Purple Knights, 146-106, and the hosts also won the men's event, 137-122.

On the men's side, sophomore Erik Hren (Maribor, Slovenia), junior Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) and freshman Kosta Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) were double event winners.

Hren took first place in the 500 yard Free (4:48.50) and the 200 yard Free (1:43.34). Du Plessis won the 100 yard Back (51.97) and the 200 yard Back (1:55.76), and Mitovic took top honors in the 100 yard Breaststroke (58.79) and 200 yard Breaststroke (2:07.85).

Other individual winners for the UB men were junior Klavio Meca (Triana, Albania) in the 1650 yard Free (16:39.84), and freshman Jose Javato (Caceres, Spain) in the 400 yard IM (4:14.59).

In women's action, UB senior Annagrazia Bonsanti (Caracas, Venezuela) won two events capturing the 1650 yard Free (17:54.41) and the 200 yard Free (1:55.78).

Other individual winners for the UB women's team were senior Victoria Tornelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 200 yard Breaststroke (2:32.88), and junior Clara Mico Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain) in the 400 yard IM (4:46.76). The women's 400 yard Free Relay team of Bonsanti, Mico Gonzalez plus junior Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) and senior Rebeka Repman (Sombor, Serbia) took first place in a time of 3:42.12.

Up next, the Bridgeport women will host LIU Post this Saturday in the Wheeler Recreation Center at 1:00 p.m. The UB men are off until November 17th when they will being the BU Invitational in Boston.
