Swim Teams Dominate St. Peter's In 2017 Return To Meet Action
Purple Knights Turn In Top Times In 31 Of 32 Events
Jersey City, N.J.-It was a dominant return to the water for the University of Bridgeport women's and men's swimming teams on Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Knights saw their first meet action during the 2017 calendar year. On the day, the combined UB teams turned in the top times in 31 of 32 events to sweep the host St. Peter's University Peacocks. The UB women topped St. Peter's 100-17, and the men prevailed by a score of 87-36.
Graduate student Jera Majeric (Prevalje, Slovenia) won three individual events on the women's side winning the 100-yard Backstroke (59.53), the 100-yard Freestyle (54.88) and the 500-yard Freestyle (5:19.23).
Newcomer, sophomore Oksana Marchuk (Mlyniv, Ukraine) made an immediate positive impact on the team winning the 200-yard Butterfly (2:05.26) and 100-yard Fly (57.14), plus she turned in the top time in the 200-yard IM (2:10.26).
Freshman Amila Beganovic (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina) was also a double winner for the Bridgeport women taking first in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:12.24) and the 200-yard Breaststroke (2:33.92).
For the Bridgeport men, four swimmers were double winners.
Freshman Leonard Posa (Zrenjanin, Serbia) captured top honors in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:00.51) and the 200-yard Breaststroke (2:15.84).
Senior Ivan Sangines (Barcelona, Spain) won the 200-yard Freestyle (1:43.50) and the 100-yard Free (48.54).
Sophomore Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) took first in the 100-yard Backstroke (53.44) and the 200-yard Back (1:58.02).
New addition to the UB men's roster, freshman Erik Hren (Maribor, Slovenia) grabbed the top spot in the 1650-yard Freestyle (16:25.40) and the 500-yard Free (4:36.27).
Up next, the Bridgeport swimming teams will be back in action on Friday afternoon, January 27 at Southern Connecticut State University. Meet action is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
